President William Ruto donated Ksh2 Million to aid the grieving families of the 11 students who died in the Kenyatta University (KU) bus accident.
The donation was presented by First Lady Rachel Ruto during a memorial service organized by the KU fraternity on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
Mama Rachel Ruto, a KU alumna, expressed, “I would like to present a contribution and donation of Sh2 million from our President William Ruto to support the families and the entire work as we prepare to send off our children,”

The 11 students died when the KU bus collided with an oncoming truck at Maungu in Voi on March 18. The Department of Health Management and Informatics students were headed to Mombasa on an academic trip.

First Lady Rachel Ruto described the departed students not just as learners but as cherished members of their families and communities, brimming with potential and aspirations for the future.
She stated, “They were not just students, they were also family members in their respective homes. They were bright students, full of potential and eager to learn, graduate and go out to conquer the world.”
In addition to extending sympathies, the First Lady emphasized the importance of supporting the 47 students currently undergoing treatment, wishing them a swift recovery.
Rachel Ruto praised the university for helping the victims and their families, urging everyone to honor the students’ memory by being kind and caring.
Moreover, Rachel Ruto addressed motorists, urging them to exercise caution and vigilance on the roads to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

President Ruto’s Ksh2 Million donation was in response to the university’s appeal for financial assistance to aid the KU bus accident victims.
Kenyans from all walks of life have rallied together to support the affected families. The university’s management expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, emphasizing that the contributions would be used to cover medical expenses, funeral arrangements, and other essential needs.
