In a heart-wrenching thread seen on Boniface Mwangi’s Twitter page, the activist has given a brief narration of how the bodies of dead people are disposed of in the river.
Disposed bodies
It is reported that there are endless bodies recovered from River Yala almost after every two or three days. The retrieved bodies are dumped in Yala Sub County Hospital and labelled “unknown”. The bodies are later buried in a mass County grave as they are unclaimed and unknown bodies.
Reports have it that the bodies are exclusively of male young adults probably in their thirties. According to the reports, most of the bodies are exhumed attached to a heavy load portraying that they were dumped with intentions to remain sunk in the infamous river.
So Mwangi accompanied by Haki Africa’s director Khalid visited River Yala on Monday as well as Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
Mwangi disclosed that on 20th October 2021, Yala Mortuary buried 9 unidentified bodies to create space in the morgue. Since then, the hospital receives atleast five bodies from River Yala every month. He also said that what they saw at the morgue was grotesque and horrifying.
At Yala mortuary we saw 21 bodies listed as “unknown men.” Most of them bore marks of torture, tied with ropes, polythene bags on their heads and some had deep cuts. The bodies are decomposing fast and it’s likely they will be buried in a mass grave very soon.

In the dreadful unfolding of the story, Mwangi also revealed that he spoke to a man, Okero, who praised himself for his ability to remove rotting sunk bodies from the river.
Okero has been retrieving bodies from the river since childhood. Because his family’s lineage is known for the skills of retrieving bodies from the River. He was used to retrieving suicide or accidental drowning bodies. But presently he retrieves murdered humans dumped in the river.
Okero and the locals disclosed to Boni that the bodies are brought from different areas and dumped in the river. Two vehicles a Probox and a double cabin, have been spotted disposing bodies into River Yala. Boda Boda riders, and children going to school have seen those cars early in the morning.
Okero has also documented images of all the bodies he has retrieved from the rover. But Mwangi said they are too graphic to share. Okero has given us images of every single body he has removed from River Yala,they’re too graphic to share.He has documented the #RiverYalaBodies.This past week he removed three bodies, two of them of Somali origin.
Okero even told Boni and his crew that there are still many bodies still floating on the river. But they couldn’t believe him. It was only a matter of minutes before he spotted and shown them two bodies. See video
Mwangi has urged Kenyans who have a missing person and think they might be dead to check at Yala Sub-County Hospital Mortuary. Your loved one might be one of the bodies that will be disposed of soon if not claimed. Lest you forget, Kenya is a criminal state.
