A devastating incident occurred on Sunday, April 28, as a boat carrying over 50 individuals capsized while attempting to cross River Tana, which was swollen due to flooding.
The boat capsized at Kona Punda in the Garissa Madogo area while en route to Mororo in Tana River County.
Garissa Senator Ali Roba shared the heartbreaking news, revealing that 28 lives were lost, with many still missing.
He stated on X, “It is with a heavy heart that I reach out during this profoundly difficult time. The devastating floods across Kenya have brought unimaginable sorrow, claiming over 76 lives and continuing to impact many more. Today the tragic incident in Mororo-Garissa, where a boat capsized, has claimed 28 more lives with more reported missing, deepening this national grief.
Roba extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, praying for strength and peace.
“May the souls of the departed find peace- to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” he remarked.
The Kenya Red Cross reported that 23 passengers had been rescued by 9:50 pm, while efforts to locate the missing individuals were ongoing.
According to the organization, “23 people have been rescued and are currently receiving care at Madogo Hospital, while others are still missing.”
